Day 1: 490 Miles
Starting location: Home – 28 degrees
Ending location: Bowling Green, Kentucky – 57 degrees
Weather: Sunny
Roads: Dry and salt free!
This is the type of day that takes a lot of stamina. It was just driving and more driving on expressways with a lot of stressful traffic. The ultimate road trip! Fortunately, being the Sunday after Christmas, there were not many semi’s. Nonetheless, it was a really long day for both Dottie and me.
We crossed into Central Time, adding another hour to the trip. I had taken the Apple maps ETA to be in home time (EST)….unfortunately, it was using the destination time. We added an hour when we crossed time zones. So, about an hour out from Bowling Green, I pulled into a Kentucky rest area to feed Dottie and give her a potty walk since I knew we would get in after dark. We watched a glorious sunset over some hills. It was pink and burgundy with some purple thrown in. So, the stop let me appreciate the beauty even though the trip was feeling long.
After driving the last hour in full darkness, we pulled into our destination around 6pm. It made me appreciate being on the western side of the time zone since it lengthens the daylight! I was now on the eastern side of the time zone which is an adjustment.
Overnighting in Quiet
After an eleven hour drive, I was really thankful when we pulled into our spot to spend the night. It was a Cabela’s! They had signs that said No trucks overnight, but RV’s are welcome! It turned out to be a very quiet night compared to my Walmart experience back in April. I’ll take Cabela’s everytime! They even had a nice field next to the lot for the morning potty walk! I ate leftovers for dinner and called it a night around 8pm (9pm EST). Dottie is a really good passenger! She slept most of the way, but was glad for Clarice to stop moving. There was only one other RVer there for the night, and despite being close to I-65, it was reasonably quiet.
One funny caveat to this day. After I crawled into bed, I received a facetime call to help my daughter figure out how the corkscrew worked. Hmmm….seems one day away, and the party is already getting started! Actually, she had a single friend over, so I am just using this as a bit of humor….I hope!
Sorry no pictures of this day….just a map.
Love the updates!!
Glad you had good roads for such a long day of driving! Thank you for sharing your adventures and thanks for the tip about Cabela’s! Enjoy your day today!
