After getting the awaited propane on Monday morning and fueling up, we headed back to Canada on the Haines highway. This is the only road to leave Haines without taking a ferry.
Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve
Leaving the city of Haines, we came to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve with 48,000 acres of protected river bottom land and drove along the Chilkat River for several miles. In the winter months there are over 3500 eagles in the preserve as they come for the late salmon run and winter over here. In the summer there are about 400 year round eagles that stay. Ironically, we did not see any eagles here, but have seen them elsewhere. I guess since we have them in Michigan and around our house, it’s not as big a deal anymore to see eagles. Nonetheless they are interesting very large raptors and I’m glad we give them a home.
Views from the Haines Highway
Leaving the preserve we crossed back into Canada (British Columbia) and drove through the mountain passes along Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park and Kluane National Park and Reserve.
Here is a link to a story about them in Michigan if you are interested in their story.
Kathleen Lake Hiking
There is only one campground within Kluane National Park and that is Kathleen Lake. The campground is a beautiful wooded area about a half mile hike up the hill from the actual Lake. We stayed two nights here since they had REAL hiking trails! Yay!
Dottie and I did a portion of the King’s Throne trail to just above tree line. The trail becomes loose rock and extreme elevation gain beyond that point, and we had it with our 5.6 miles of hiking. Here are the pictures from the hike. I did not get any pictures of our campsite, sorry.
Wow beautiful beautiful pictures! What an amazing place to see and hike in! Looks much cooler there! Temps to be in the 90”s here the next few days. Enjoy your travels!
Thanks, Sue! I hope you are staying cool. I heard it was terribly hot there. Highs here are 62ish and lows in the 50’s. Really great walking and sightseeing weather.
Really great pics! Keep ‘em coming!! Definitely wish I was there. Alaska is at the top of my bucket list and every time I go (3x so far), it jumps right back to the top of the list as soon as I land in GR!
So glad you got to visit 3 times, Jay! It is really beautiful, I can see why it rises back to the top. It’s hard to get enough of the beauty and solitude.
