Sorry for my long absence. I’ve been out of cell service for many days now. Today I have stopped at a Visitor’s Center to get a post out on their wifi service. Thank you, Yukon!
Leaving Atkin
On my way into Atkin I saw an unmarked turn out at the top of a big hill. I wasn’t sure if I could pull in, so I pass by; but, on the way back, I made the turn and went up the hill. I’m really glad I did!
Road to Skagway
This road is a side trip off the Alaska highway and is the most spectacular scenery yet. If you are tired of mountains, this is probably not your post. I have to confess, I think I drove with my mouth hanging open for most of the drive. I hope you enjoy, I will just let these pictures tell the story.
Sort of a panoramic pic, check the Island out in each pic.He was really that close! But had reflection in the window…so opened it.See the bear? I got out here to take more pics of the scenery….carried my bear spray!Summit LakeUS/Canada borderWoo Hoo! Dipping our toes into Alaska! We aren’t done with Canada yet, though. Next post will tell that story.Clarice at the summit!Looking towards Skagway at SummitThat bar is for the snow plows!!! The train you can take out of Skagway up to the border and back. I did this with my parents on a cruise, but I have to say the drive seems more spectacular. The thing that makes this so fascinating, is that this is the gold rush trail the miners trekked. The Canadian government required them to bring a years worth of supplies (a ton) after they realized the shape some of the mines were in.This is what they do when the tourist return…..had to share. Not sure if this is COVID cleaning, or if they always did this. Nonetheless, you get a good view!

Gold Miners Cemetery
There is an interesting story here about a bad guy and a good guy who dueled it out. Not sure the whole back story, but they actually do a play about it in the town.
The good guy’s graveThe waterfall behind the cemetery named after the good guy…Reid fallsThe RV park where I stayed for three nights waiting for the ferry…I had the place to myself!
Thanks, Shawn and Ellen! I can’t get over how many different mountain ranges there are in Alaska. I knew there were some mountains, but they are almost everywhere. You know you have been spoiled when you start to say, “Not photo-worthy” of any mountain!
Just WOW, this is so amazing and indeed the pictures tell a story but getting there and experiencing it in person also tells a different story, right! Blessings to you Karen and a world of wonderful memories as you travel God’s beautiful masterpieces.
Thanks Jean-Claude! Yes, you are right there is something about being there in person that makes it different. The silence is deafening, so to speak, and it is a very spiritual adventure. You can hear yourself think and pray when you don’t have internet to distract.
I met a birder a couple of days ago. He was from Quebec and he sounded just like you, my friend! Made me miss all my besties! 🙂
Glad you enjoyed the drive, Christie! I have to say I have put my Skagway drive at the top of my drive experiences. It really did just take your breath away. In retrospect, I wish I had pulled out a chair and just sat there for a nice long while.
I’m gonna read every thing you post on Alaska, bit the bullet and we are cruising to Alaska next August! Thank you for sharing!
All I can say is, Stunning! I absolutely love mountains.
